Driving Through The North Welsh Coast: Chester To Holyhead

Driving on a coastal route can be a lovely way to spend a Sunday afternoon or during the summer holidays. One such route through North Wales is particularly enjoyable due to the range or scenery along the way. We’ve broken down the route from Chester to Holyhead so you will know what to expect and what to look out for.

Chester to Talacre The drive from Chester to Talacre is less than 24 miles and should take around 50 minutes to complete. The journey will take you northwards across the river from the Wirral. Once you reach the Welsh town of Talacre, you will be at the same height as the Merseyside town of Hoylake. The town features some impressive sand dunes and boasts the status of Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) (1).

Talacre to Llandudno The 26 mile stretch between Talacre and Llandudno is crammed full of attractions. You’ve got the beaches at Rhyl and Prestatyn, and many places to get an ice cream or play on arcade machines. The Welsh Mountain Zoo is located near Colwyn Bay, and there is a castle there too if you prefer immersing yourself in history. Once you make it to Llandudno, you can walk along the pier, take a ride in a cable car, or go tobogganing or skiing (no snow required!).

Llandudno to Bangor Travelling another 24 miles to Bangor will take you through the Snowdonia National Park, an area of stunning natural beauty that is well worth exploring if you fancy getting some fresh air. Once you get to Bangor, one of the smallest cities in Fantastic Britain, take a walk along the pier and stare back up at Mt. Snowdonia.

Bangor to Holyhead Once you cross the bridge you can either travel along the A55 to Holyhead, or continue making your way to Holyhead near the coast. If you travel along the south you will be able to explore some quieter beaches than Rhyl or Prestatyn. You will need to go over another bridge to get to Bangor as it isn’t on the same island as Anglesey. From here, you could get on a ferry to Dublin or Dun Laoghaire and explore Ireland if you wanted!
